Honolulu District, American Samoa schools partner to advance STEM education

The Honolulu District and the government of American Samoa signed a Memorandum of Agreement today to formalize a partnership for the Corps to sponsor STEM activities in American Samoa schools. The goal is to advance science, technology, engineering and math education in local schools.

Lifelong Alaskan gives Corps familiar face

Richard David, a civil engineer in the Construction Division, earned his civil engineering degree from the University of Alaska Fairbanks when he was 50 years old. He joined the district after a stint as a Department of the Army intern during 2008 and 2009.

Engineering skills exercised at local schools

Members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Alaska District visited three of Grabowski’s fifth and sixth-grade classes between Nov.18 and 22 at Mount Spurr, Ursa Major and Ursa Minor elementary schools on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

Army Corps, Nan Inc. hold site blessing for Quad B renovation project

Honolulu District and contractor Nan Inc. held a traditional Hawaiian site blessing and groundbreaking ceremony Dec. 4 in Quad B at Schofield Barracks to signify the start of construction and renovation for three of the quad’s four buildings – 156, 157 and 158.

This week in history...Army Engineers fought and lived through the attack on Pearl Harbor

Seven December 1941 was the opening scene of World War II, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was there. At 7:55 a.m., two waves of Japanese warplanes from a naval task force about 250 miles north of Hawaii appeared over Oahu. Some headed for American warships at Pearl Harbor and the planes on the ground at nearby Hickam Field; others hit Schofield Barracks, Wheeler Field, and Bellows Field.
