CAMP ZAMA, Japan - Work continues on a $27 million medical/dental facility project on Camp Zama that will enhance medical care for military members, civilians and their families on the installation. The project, slated for completion by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Japan District in March 2016, will renovate the Brig. Gen. Crawford F. Sams U.S. Army Health Clinic and the U.S. Army Dental Activity Japan Clinic, also known on post as Building 704.
Together with the U.S. Army Health Facility Planning Agency, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Japan District is overseeing the design and construction of the multi-phased project.
”We are honored to provide these updated facilities to the Camp Zama Community,” said Japan Engineer District Commander John Hurley. “These facilities underline the Army’s commitment to provide the best medical care to our military service members, civilians and their families.”
The project also includes the construction of a temporary facility in the existing parking lot of Building 704 in order to provide swing space for Clinic staff and patient care throughout the course of the existing clinic renovation.
The existing facility is approximately 38,973 square feet and accommodates 115 patients and staff. Once the renovation is completed, the facility will include a redesigned patient intake area, structural foundation improvements, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, fire protection and upgrades to all interior lighting and communications systems.
Like all Army construction, the newly renovated medical facility was designed to include the Silver rating criteria established by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, in accordance with the U.S. Green Building Council standards. Eco-friendly features include the use of energy efficient building materials, lighting, and ventilation systems. Additionally, this renovation project will reuse a major portion of the existing walls, floors and roofing allowing a significant reduction in construction waste and demolition while sustaining major components of the existing facility.
