Army Corps Hosts Public Meeting to Discuss Tafuna Flood Risk Management Study

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Honolulu District, in partnership with the American Samoa Department of Public Works (DPW), is hosting a public meeting and open house to provide updates on the Tafuna Flood Risk Management Feasibility Study and planned structure inventory and geotechnical surveys.

Meeting information:

The event will be held Friday, Feb. 7, 2025, with the meeting starting at 5 p.m. local time with an open house to follow.  It will be located in Tafuna at the Methodist of Samoa American Samoa Synod Hall.

Structure inventory and geotechnical surveys:

The public is advised that USACE and DPW will have teams collecting data for the structure inventory survey in the Tafuna-Leone floodplain area. The teams will begin surveying Saturday, Feb. 8, 2025, and conclude Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025. The team members will be recognized by hi-visibility vests with the USACE logo. The public meeting and open house are intended to provide information about the study to the community and allow for the opportunity for the community to provide input to USACE and DPW.    

Background Information:

The Tafuna Flood Risk Management Feasibility Study will investigate potential measures to manage risks to life safety and property from riverine flooding within the Tafuna-Leone floodplain. It is known the Tafuna-Leone floodplain experiences intense rainfall and frequent flooding due to shallow and undefined stream channels. The Tafuna region has a history of severe flooding due to its geographic and climatic conditions with notable events including Tropical Cyclones Esau, Heta and Gita. This study is authorized under Section 444 of the Water Resources Development Act of 1996 and is funded by Disaster Relief Act of 2019.
