Corps welcomes new deputy commander

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A new deputy commander for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Alaska District at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson arrived in April.

Maj. Mark J. DeRocchi assumes responsibility for managing the organization’s programs, manpower and resources, which annually execute military construction, civil works and environmental activities throughout Alaska. He also directs operations during emergency contingencies.

Previously, DeRocchi was the operations officer for the 92nd Engineer Battalion at Fort Stewart, Ga., and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan from 2012-2013. As the unit’s executive officer, he deployed to Afghanistan from 2010-2011.

From 2008-2010, he served as an instructor, assistant professor and executive officer for the civil and mechanical engineering department at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.

He commanded Company D, 326th Engineer Battalion with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky., from 2004-2006. During this tour, he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2005-2006, which included an assignment as the military transition team chief for an Iraqi Army battalion in the Adhamiyah section of Baghdad in 2006.

DeRocchi’s other assignments include battalion logistics officer for the 326th Engineer Battalion, 101st Airborne Division, where he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2003-2004; aide-de-camp to the commander for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Pacific Ocean Division at Fort Shafter, Hawaii, from 2003-2004; and platoon leader and executive officer for Company B, 65th Engineer Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, from 1998-2000.

He earned Master of Science degrees in civil engineering from the University of New Hampshire in 2008 and in engineering management in 2002 from the University of Missouri. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1998 from the U.S. Military Academy and was commissioned in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Originally from Lee, N.H., DeRocchi’s Army service began when he enlisted as a field artillery crew member in 1993.

He has received various medals, citations, ribbons and unit awards, including the Bronze Star Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters.
