Feavel began his career as a forester at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Rock Island District in Illinois while serving as an Army engineer officer on a two-year active-duty term assignment. He began his civilian career as project forester for the Mississippi River Project and eventually became the district forester.

At the Mississippi River Project, he managed a robust forest management program on 300 miles of river corridor, setting up timber sales along the upper Mississippi, barging timber from islands, coordinating with state and federal biologists, and managing wildlife programs.

Feavel was commissioned as an engineer officer in 1980 and served 28 years in the Army Reserve. For most of this time, he was assigned to combat heavy engineer units in Iowa and Alaska. Before retiring in 2008 as a lieutenant colonel, he served a year in Iraq as the base engineer/Department of Public Works at Camp Anaconda/Balad Airbase from 2006-2007.

Feavel was born and raised in Wisconsin. He earned a bachelor’s degree in forest management from the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point in 1980.

He has been married to Linda (Waldal) Feavel for 33 years. They have two sons, Vance, an Air Force pilot, and Jonathon, a junior attending Iowa State University on a hockey scholarship.
