On Oct.30, Janet Post (second from right), project manager in the Regulatory Division, and Jeremy Grauf (third from right), Department of Army intern, educated approximately 100 students about wetlands during an afterschool event that was dedicated to the studies of science, technology, engineering and mathematics at Turnagain Elementary School. Students learned about the importance of protecting wetlands by using a model that replicated a factory, dairy farm, golf course, roads, rivers and a harbor. The students sprinkled powdered juice to represent industrial pollutants and fertilizer; cocoa powder to show dairy waste; and salad dressing for car oil. Then, the children sprayed water to demonstrate rain and watched how sponges, exhibiting wetlands, absorbed and filtered the water. Students were excited to see how the pollutants were prevented from getting into the river and harbor.
