Far East District: Enabling Force Projection
Far East District leadership visits Kunsan resident office to inspect the concrete placement of a hardened aircraft flow through shelter. A total of 10 shelters will be constructed, each with a fuel pantograph arm connected to an in-ground fuel tank. When finished, this project will service Kunsan Air Base aircraft with quick fuel turn around capabilities, provide semi hardened protection and ultimately support mission requirements.

Improving Disaster Response: United States and Ninh Thuan Inaugurate Disaster Management Center
On March 1, Susan Sutton (sixth from right), deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi, presented the Ninh Thuan Province disaster management coordination center to the people of Vietnam during a ceremony. The Alaska District managed the construction of the two-story facility, which is one of 11 similar projects completed along Vietnam’s coastal provinces that are hit by cyclone and flooding events. In addition to the building, a communications system will also support efforts to prevent and minimize loss of life and property during emergencies. The total cost of the building is about $693,400 and required 11 months to complete.

New dormitory prepares Eielson for F-35 personnel influx
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Alaska District turned over a new dormitory to the Air Force Dec. 21 at Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks. Building 2205 is state-of-the-art, three-stories and will accommodate 168 enlisted personnel.

USFK Operations center construction progress on track
Major construction on the United States Forces Korea (USFK) operations center is underway. The operations center, a 377,000 square-foot, two-level underground facility, will support the USFK headquarters requirements as part of the relocation of forces to U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys. The project will provide facilities for USFK's mission during armistice, crisis, and wartime.

BG Thomas Tickner Visits USACE Alaska District's Alternate Care Facility

Brig. Gen. Thomas Tickner, commanding general of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Pacific Ocean Division, meets with contractors that worked on the alternate care facility at the Alaska Airlines Center on April 21 in Anchorage. After receiving a mission assignment from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Corps' Alaska District assisted the state by converting a portion of the arena into an alternate care site capable of treating up to 51 patients. The project was completed and turned over to state medical officials on April 17. Tickner praised the collaborative efforts of federal, state and local partners to lower the risk and keep Alaskans safe during the coronavirus health crisis.

ON THE LEADING EDGE

The National Academy of Construction (NAC) has elected Gene Ban, director of programs, USACE, Pacific Ocean Division, as a member of its 2017 class. He was inducted October 26 at the NAC Annual Meeting, which was held at the Fairmont Georgetown. Ban was cited by the Academy as a strategist and top civilian in the Army Senior Executive Service who has provided leadership to multi-agency military construction programs involving international host nations, territories, and governments.
